Joint Statement & Consumer Advisory from Singapore Optometric Association and Johnson & Johnson Vision Singapore

1. Recently, Johnson and Johnson Vision Singapore initiated a voluntary recall of some specific lots of ACUVUE® products in Singapore on 21 October 2017.  Though there are no significant health risks associated with the recalled product, and there have been no adverse event or product complaints reported, Johnson and Johnson Vision Singapore is initiating a voluntary recall of limited lots of contact lenses because they do not meet Johnson and Johnson’s quality standards.

2. Johnson and Johnson Vision Singapore worked closely and quickly with Health Sciences Authority(HSA), Singapore Optometric Association (SOA) and Eye Care Professionals. As of 23rdOctober 2017, the company has completed retrieval of affected products from optical stores. The company has identified the root causes that led to the quality issues and has taken corrective measures to help ensure they do not recur. For further queries, the public can contact ACUVUE® support at 800-101-3130 (Monday- Friday 8am – 5pm) or email support@acuvue.com.sg. SOA is pleased that Johnson and Johnson Vision Singapore is taking an initiative to voluntarily recall the affected products and notify their eye care practitioners to ensure safe contact lens wear.

3. Contact lenses are medical devices that need to be prescribed by eye care practitioners including optometrists.  HSA requires registered contact lens importers and distributors to have systems in place to trace and account for product distribution and quality assurance. Lenses purchased online lack the safeguards that are available in authorized routes. SOA would like to highlight to contact lens users in Singapore to obtain contact lenses from authorized sources of supply, to have proper eye checks, contact lens fitting assessment and regular follow-ups to ensure that contact lens wear remains a safe and beneficial experience.
